Abuse, definition of

By adminMonday - November 2nd, 2009Categories: Uncategorized

Abuse, a method of controlling someone through sex, violence, or emotional and/or mental manipulation.
Sexual and physical abuse are easier to identify due to the tangible evidence left behind. Emotional and mental? Not so much. The easiest way to identify that kind of abuse is a) looking at the situation and b) looking at the individuals involved.
The basic thing to remember is that the principles behind abuse are the same as a result the people involved are going to form the same sort of relationship as those in any other form of abusive relationship.
The big thing with emotional and mental abuse is control through manipulation and battering down one’s self esteem. It’s much like methods used in brainwashing.
People who are mentally and emotionally abusive will, like other abusers, attempt to isolate the victim and remove them from their friends and support systems, thereby ensuring that the abuser is the only one the victim feels they can turn to.
If the victim attempts to leave the relationship the abuser will guilt or even threaten the victim. This can be anything from harm to the victim to the abuser using emotional manipulation by threatening to harm themselves.
When entering the relationship the abuser will start to test boundaries. The victim may even set boundaries at first but later let the abuser cross the boundaries. Once the abuser has crossed over boundaries they are free to control their victim for as long as the relationship lasts.
